Safe on 'Third'

Deconstructing the program
In response to inquiries, here is the next in a series of annotations relating to our broadcast/podcast.
Now a part of the program's lexicon, The Third Man Theme is from the original Carol Reed movie of the same name, released in 1949. Composer Anton Karas, a zither player, performed in a beer garden when Reed asked Karas to score and perform for the film's sountrack. Karas agreed, though he had no experience beyond playing in beer and wine gardens. The zither was a new sound for English and American audiences, but it expressed perfectly the atmosphere for the film, which was the story of a stranger in a strange land. Karas borrowed the theme's melody from a zither-practice book. The theme is one of the few standards no one ever attempted to write lyrics for, until now.

The Third Man
(music by Anton Karas, lyrics by Frank Cotolo)

Look around and you may see,
One and two and maybe three,
Do you think you see the accurate amount?
Should you question how you count?

One and one can equal two,
If that's exactly what you view,
But one and two to me,
Don't always have to equal three.

If you look under a rock,
Mysteries you will unlock,
Things you never knew, you find you shouldn't know,
Suddenly they start to show.
Then, when you feel that you've seen everything you can,
You look again, you count the first,
The second and the Third Man

Internet Apocalypse now

A long time ago and far, far away, Cotolo Chronicles broadcasted a warning to all who cherished the freedom of alternative entertainment and education. Back then, before iPods and mass-video streaming over the internet, we were the men on the watchtower, peering onto the horizon. Then, as the summer steam settled on the sands, whammo! The invasion began.

The big-money machine has begun the attack. The internet is under siege. Your freedom to use this theater freely, de-regulated and sans the sub-standards of brick-and-morter media operations is in serious peril. NBC, Sony and Murdoch's Mauraders are aiming and firing. Pardon my prose, but this is now a very serious drama.

On the June 29 live broadcast our voices will be raised against the machine. You had better come to this town meeting and be ready to light a torch and storm the mad-scientist's castle laboratory because the next voice you hear, god forbid, may be the voice telling you, "Shut up and shut down, the internet is off limits from here on out." This could be the fall of the digital empire.

If anyone can, 'Yukon'

Hoary nights are no strangers to strangers. They come and go (the nights, not the strangers) amid journeys set upon by people like you and me. Well, people like me, for sure. And when it comes to such nights and such people like me, you can bet that I will have a bottle of my favorite brew with me to make things smoooooooooooooooooth.

This is not a commercial, this is an endorsement of a rebel liquor, a stave of a beverage and a demon's delight, Yukon Jack. The queen has made it the official Canadian liquor of Cotolo Chronicles and the extended family of Idi Amin Dada still refused to go public but insist privately that enjoy a nip or two of the stuff during celebrations of Amin's death.

So get yourself a gallon and do what Gleason would had he lined his gullet with The Black Sheep Of Canadian Liquors!

The heads, the hearts, the horrors

There is enough food for thought in the June 22 program to feed Zam-Zamians for a year. Or is it Zam-Zamites? Or is it Zam-Zamese? Whatever, here are some follow-ups to the terrific information presented by Dr. Gary Popoli exclusively on the June 22 Cotolo Chronicles.

First, you can check out the Sigmund Freud book, Civilization and its Discontents. I am going to get a copy today.

Secondly, here is a link to a brief bio on G. Stanley Hall, which brings up the matter of "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny."

Next, read about Phineas Gage (illustration above), the man whose head made history.

And just what do you need to know about endorphins and how they can make your life easier?

All references to Zam Zam, a place on Earth no one would rather be, can start here.

Turk Berain is a detective's detective who detects more than most detectives detect. Check out the latest Turk Berain story, The Face of Turk Berain, here.

Mind over what matters

We have confirmation from Dr. Popoli as the guest on June 22's program. The good doctor has been very busy lately and may have lost his appointment book in a dastardly rainstorm but still he will take the time to talk with us about any number of things, all important to your mental and emotional health. In any event and in every event, because the good doctor is on this evening's live broadcast, which is the second day of summer, Y2K+6.

Here are some "tags" relating to topics that may spawn some talk: Genghis Khan, Wikipedia, Nintendo, Google maps, Google ads, YouTube, ManiaTV.com, DJ Dylan, Tom Green, Art Bell, Glen Beck ... There are usually more than we can ever handle in the two hours, guest or no guest.

Talk on the 'Wild' side

Wild Bunch Radio and Cotolo Chronicles have settled on the conditions of a deal that is bound to be great for both parties. In fact, it may turn into one big party. Wild Bunch Radio will be rebroadcasting shows on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. EST, preceding The Jiggy Jaguar Show.

Rescheduling of the roster at Wild Bunch may include simulcasting the live broadcast on Thursday nights. That is still pending. But best of all, there will be specials, maybe as often as monthly, with interactive elements. Yes, meaning people can log in and ask questions and make rude and wonderful comments. Stay tuned for the times of those specials, which will be exclusive to Wild Bunch.

Thanks to all the people who have emailed Bill Maher and to all the people coming here from Podomatic, a continuing source of growth. You can also check into our other blog at http://cotolotalk.blogstream.com/. It's called Talk and it is one more bullet in the body of the net from the man whose name adorns the title of the program. Check in tomorrow for the June 22 show preview.

Creature from the Amazon Lagoon

Bill Maher claims he has the "first internet talk show." Without clarifying that the program is a video presentation, he makes a broad statement that simply is not true.

The show is Amazon Fishbowl with Bill Maher, sponsored by UPS and Cingular. It is a weekly internet broadcast "featuring the brightest stars in film, music, literature and television," according to Amazon, which is the headquarters for streaming. New episodes premiere each Thursday this summer. Entertainment Weekly called the show a "weekly cyberbore" that doesn't live up to Bill's bragging.

And, of course, it is not the first internet talk show, no less an innovative presentation. Maher, Amazon, UPS and Cingular need to know that Cotolo Chronicles is the real deal, among the first internet talk shows and certainly the most unique. We urge everyone to email Maher, Amazon, UPS and Cingular and alert them to the truth.

This is not a promotion of the show as much as it is a show of promotion for alternative broadcasting everywhere.

Life as we know it

Curt Brandao (pictured left, or is it right?) and Frank Cotolo (pictured right, or is it left) have met before in the hallowed halls of alternative broadcast. Each time they do, listeners are privy to the unleashing of bright new ideas and very dumb thought, too. Because Brandao and Cotolo happen to be two of the great humorists of our times and great humorists address great notions, important issues and serious contenders for the heavyweight title.

On the June 15 show, which celebrates the smack-dab middle of the year, Curt Brandao (pictured left, or is it right?) and Frank Cotolo (pictured right, or is it left) are joined at the hip by being hip with all the wonder modern technology allows. The matter to begin with on the June 15 show is Second Life, the newest and most frightening adventure in virtual reality to yet rear its head on the Internet.

Go to the Beck of the line

Glenn Beck is a radio guy expanding into a TV guy. This has happened before. Big-buck broadcast voices try to make the trip from behind the mic to behind the camera. None of it translates.

Now, Glenn Beck has a television show. I've seen it. It's typical, it's run of the mill. Beck is a DJ-turned political voice, which is the lowest form of radio personality. Next up on that list is stand-up comedian-turned sitcom star, but that is a whole 'nother bag of crayons.

The world, no less the broadcasting world, does not need one more evangelist. Glenn, a recovered addict of sorts, now preaches to his choir. Beck, Humphries, Limbaugh, Medved, Drudge, Hannity and O'Reilly (and all the local talk hosts jumping on the conservative-engined bandwagon) are one-trick ponies serving an audience with one-track minds.

It's not that I or any listener craves liberal views or even moderate views. It is that all of these fellows (and the women, like Ingraham and Colter) refuse to entertain, lighten up and back off from their agendas. Empty suits, empty dresses and, moreover, extremely untalented, would-be entertainers.

Main course of side dishes

On the June 8 program, let's explore a few things.

Among them, in no particular order: Plan 9 From Outer Space, dogs and phantoms, YouTube and its clones, The Kinks, The Zombies, an amusement park called Nintendo, the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame exhibits madness, the Wikipedia source crisis, the pop of King and the magic moments of true romance.

Nothing rehearsed, but everything prepared. Come with me to a place where a whole army can't get to us, for two hours, while we replenish our precious bodily fluids, tend to our curiosities and merge the brain with the heart.

A pair of sixes in '06

Tom Jones, a bastard child, was raised as the son of an English gentleman. Tom was a likeable, devil-may-care chap growing into adulthood. He had a love for the beautiful Sophie Western but no strength to resist any other attractive lady. So, Tom became a singer and stuffed a sock with a hard vegetable into his pants so that anyone who listened to him would assume Tom had a humungous shlong.

That is a hybrid biography of Thomas Jones Woodward, who celebrates his birthday today, making it to 66 on June 7. The famous pop singer is often confused with the famous British character played by Albert Finney in the movie that made eating dinner erotic. Filthy rich but still unaware of what might be new with the pussycat, Sir Tom Jones, the singer, continues to tour furiously. It was recently discovered that his schlong is larger than any known vegetable that fits in a sock. That is unusual.

Sixth sense

Why does the date with three sixes in it bring believers to their knees? Ask a numerologist. The number 9 is an important numeric symbol to occult groups. Because the number 13 gets all the press with its superstitious implications, the number 9 is not feared by the average person.

Satanists embrace the number 9 for a few reasons. First, Satanists enjoy reversing, mirroring and inverting symbols, letters and numbers. So, they turn the number "9" upside down and get the number 6, which makes up the number of the Beast (666), otherwise known as the anti-Christ, according to in Revelation 13:18 in the Bible. Next, Satanists take pleasure in celebrating the death of Christ, which is identified with the number 9. Mark 15: 34-37 reveals that Christ spoke his last words on the cross at the ninth hour and "gave up the ghost."

Coincidence? Dare you think not? Sound like a bunch of superstitious baloney to you?
Superstitious? Perhaps. Baloney, perhaps not.

Pulp McCartney

Strangely, having talked about Beatles-related culture on the June 1 program (still available, see previous posts), our news sources alerted us to a Sunday story out of England that involves a surviving Beatle's soon-to-be ex-wife. Normally, we would steer clear of such fodder for folly, but this story is just too spanking good, true or not, and far be it from us to sway from the shadows of sensationalism. Besides, having once hob-nobbed, so to speak, with some members of pornographia, we don't find this particularly disturbing.

The boys in the band

In keeping with part of the conversation with Laura Legs on the June 1 show, we offer a video of the Carleton Singing Knights performing Hello Goodbye. These kids were definitely not around when Paul McCartney announced he was leaving The Beatles and George Harrision said, "Looks like we need another bass player." But the "Knights" offer evidence of another generation's discovery of Beatles music, many times removed from the point of origin.

The June 1 program's mp3 and RSS feed are available by download to the left and at Podomatic. Also, check yesterday's blog entry for rebroadcasting schedule.

I heard it through the great Vine

On June 1 another exclusive conversation with Laura Legs about everything under the Hollywood sun. Laura is a longtime, tried-and-true friend who continues to live and work in the thick of starland. She is a powerful force with a big company, great talent and more connections than Thomas Edison. And those legs!

Some great anecdotes, untold tales of fame and fortune, news, information, conversation and insubordination live, broadcast through the facilities of SRN ONE.
