Paper heat

A few things ...

In the scheme of the few things, here is good press. Maybe no press is bad press but not any press is no press at all. So, getting real press, ink, hard-copy printing in a syndicated column of newspapers (still purchased at newsstands and convenient stores around the globe, even if some of them make most of their money selling bootleg CDs and DVDs) is great news. So hit the brakes and check out this column for July 30. Click here and here and here if you missed it the first time.

As the heat wave continues across the United States, the weather bureau reminds old people not to be playing Kick the Can outdoors. Though it is never suggested that old people play Kick the Can indoors, when temperatures match the ages of people, indoor activities must be considered. Check your local weather for local dangers. Check Wikipedia for a distorted definition of old people.

Stop the end of the world, I want to get off

Gonna build a mountain, from a little hill. Gonna build a mountain, least I hope I will. Gonna build a mountain, gonna build it high. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, only I know I'm gonna try. Gonna build a dream, from a little hope. Gonna push that day dream up the mountain slope. Gonna build a day dream, gonna see it through. Gonna build a mountain and a day dream, gonna make 'em both come true. Gonna build a heaven from a little hell. Gonna build a heaven, and I know darn well, if I build a mountain with a lot of care and take my day dream up the mountain heaven will be waiting there. When I've build that heaven, as I will some day, and the Lord sends Gabriel to take me away, wanna fine young son who will take my place. I'll leave a son in my heaven on Earth, with the Lord's grace. Gonna build a heaven, from a little hell, gonna build a heaven, and I know darn well, with a fine young son who will take my place, there'll be a son in my heaven on earth with the Lord's grace. Gonna build a mountain, from a little hill. Gonna build a mountain, least I hope I will. Gonna build a mountain, gonna build it high. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, only I know I'm gonna try.

Countdown to End of Days continues ...

This blog usually takes weekends off, but the with ever-lessening number of days left to our planet, according to many, we want to get all the entries we can in.

Thanks to J-Walk's popular blog, we have the following update about End of Days from CNN.

Kyra Phillips discusses the Apocalypse with Christian authors Jerry Jenkins (who is a Rapture fan and author on the subject) and Joel C. Rosenberg (an End-of-Days analyst). CNN has, for the second time in three days, featured a segment on the potential coming of the Apocalypse (famous painting of world's end above), as related to the conflicts in the Middle East. Click to explore.

If you have not listened to our July 27 program, download the file or RSS in the left-hand column now or go to the PodOmatic link. Or catch it on Flash FM or Tyne FM from Great Britain (see July 27 entry for links).

Paul and pop

Thursday again, which means after the humbling dusk, as the air thins and the moon spins, it is time for our July 27 program. Our special guest for the evening is Paul Williams, author of books on Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Neil Young and others. He is the father of modern rock journalism, founder of the Crawdaddy magazine, philosopher and grand wazoo of pop culture.

Opinion: The world today

It was a sweltering afternoon in Sarajevo that fateful day when Gavrilo Princip put lethal bullets into the bodies of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. He was a Serb nationalist, angry that his government could not find more letters to complete his name, so he reacted violently. But the murders set in motion events that brought Europe to war.

The international set

This is a great time, as times go, to say hello in every language to the many people in the many places visiting this blog and our program daily. It never astounds me that a program that airs "from icecap to icecap" is picked up and read about in the far corners of our globe, because there is nothing local about the soundtracks of our minds. As Jackie Gleason said, so I feel, "The world is my oyster."

Here are some of the places around the world that house people taking time out of their lives to read about the show and listening to our episodes down the Hallelujah Trail (just this past week).

Click on the name of the country or city for some information on that place.

Hong Kong; Canada (Quebec, Montreal); Mexico; Great Britain (Cheshire, Stockton-on-Tees, London, Salford); Spain (Barcelona); Thailand; the Netherlands; Croatia; United States (Illinois, Massachussetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Texas, Ohio, Kansas, Virginia, New York, Delaware, North Carolina, Hawaii, Washington, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Minnesota).

If you are one of those from these places, send us your name and address and we will send you a free gift for the kindness of your actions.

Stop, look and listen

Make a list of all the other places on the web where you can be "chronicled." Plus, get yourself a hearty dose of rock and roll. Just takes a click and some time to peruse.

You can read Talk, at Blogstream.

You can be entertained by Turk Berain detective tales, essays and other unique approached to literature at the MySpace blog.

You can read my horse racing column, Cotolo Central, through CBS Sportsline.

The company you keep

The country's hottest social-cultural commentator, Brock LaRobb, returns to his exclusive broadcasting post on the July 20 program. In only two appearances, Brock has become a favorite guest. His observations are humorous, satirical and original; they are collected observations from years on the dusty roads of America, from Wall Street to Bagel Street.

On July 20 the topic is Corporate America. You have to hear it to experience it, as Brock's delivery is as expressive as his words.

We welcome The Wolf Radio back to our affiliate pack, with rebroadcasts on Friday nights. Check the station for times in your area and for the other great programming it offers.

Fabulous night for a moon dance

Tomorrow, July 20, is the anniversary of the first step taken on the moon. U.S. Astronaut Neil Armstrong refused to use my suggestion as the first words he would speak when he became the first man to set foot on the moon ("Hey, Frank, I made it!") and instead said something about leaps and mankind.

Below is a wonderful video redesigned and scored by a great electronic musician, Ian Clay, who is also a great supporter of our program. It brings us back to those frolic-filled moments when men used our moon as a dancefloor.

Talkin' twists, turns and tumbles

On the July 13 program, it's the multi-trick pony, the two-hour drum-soloin', mind jammin' voice of the show. This means that no matter where the talking starts there is no way to predict where it will wind up. But, if you are one who knows the timbre of the show, you will be prepared for some twists, turns and tumbles. It's two hours of atmosphere as we walk, crawl, skip, hop and waddle down the Hallelujah Trail. As usual, Merton Fanabala (pictured) will be on the keyboard.

History repeats on itself

Here is what a few people are saying about The Complete and Unabridged History of Japan, my in-progress novel running at IndieJournalDaily ...

A mighty work ... in progress
He continues to write, on line, this novel that defies truth, history and the essence of mankind's roots. This is an adventure, a spectacle and a revelation about the true heroes and villains of our world. -- Norton McPhrend

A big work ... continues
Mr. Cotolo is able to convey the fun, the hysteria, the toil, the drama and the cacophony felt by those with roots to a family that shaped mankind. -- Orson Wellburs

An endless work ... coming to a crescendo
Perhaps the finest account of the growth and circumstances of a nation, written in an easy to read manner. Cotolo tells us all of the stories of this great culture in a marvelous way. -- M. Scott Scottworthy

A double-duty drama ... larger than life
Never has one piece accepted the weight of past and present with such courage, stapping itself to a story about a story and how that story can be told, no less why. Thunderous laughter and tears. -- Shawn McShoelace

The cheeks speak!

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. -- Hundreds of people showed up in Orange County for an unusual ritual -- mooning trains.

People--young motorcycle club members to a 70-year-old grandmother--dropped their drawers to moon passing Amtrak trains at a fenced rail line in Laguna Niguel.

The event is unorganized. Still, by some estimates it drew as many as five-thousand people. The event began as a bet in a nearby bar nearly three decades ago, according to one cheeky source. It is believed that the trains being mooned had many empty seats.

A Costello centennial commemoration

On the July 5 program, we feature Chris Costello, daughter of the late, great Lou Costello. Chris will be talking about, among many things, the release of a terrific DVD in September.

The nature of Abbott and Costello's humor has been a part of the Cotolo Chronicles lexicon since this program began. Those listeners who have been annotating our shows are quick to place the phrases, "He's a pump, pump him, he's a pump," and "Phoenix Hotel!" as references to Abbott and Costello's television show from the early 1950s. And, of course, it has countless times that, mentioned in the crux of conversations, come the names Sid Fields, Hillary Brooke, "Stinky" and"Mike the Cop." On the July 5 show, you will find a way to become more involved with these immortal characters of comedy and, of course, introduce yourselves to them if you are new to the zany world of Abbott and Costello.

Chris is the co-author of Lou's on First, an informative, heartfelt history of her father and his journey to fame as one of America's most influential and successful comedians. Join us for an exclusive conversation with Chris on the 100th anniversary of Lou Costello's birth.
