Mind games

Got something on your mind? Our own Dr. Gary Popoli returns to the show on Aug. 31 to talk about new experiences and other shocks to the human system. And more, of course, as we jot down the sidebars.

Whether you are currently happy, recently sad, thoroughly confused, distinctly dissatisfied or just plain perplexed, a visit with "The Pope of Persona," as no one calls him, is in order. No waiting to hear the doctor tonight. Just come on in to tonight's program and take copious notes in your official Cotolo Chronicles Notebook.

Title teases

Now that the hype for the movie Snakes On A Plane has faded, all that is left is the title. It generated such buzz that Hollywood is preparing to produce a string of spinoffs using its title-power. Here are the titles of some already in progress.

Turtles On A Ship; Lizards On A Boat; Crocodiles On A Car; Birds On A Raft; Rats On A Roller Coaster; Bears On A School Bus; Eagles On A Golf Cart; Fish On A Freight Train;

Gorillas On A Gondolier; Frogs On A Jeep; Lions On A Dump Truck; Manatees On A Tractor; Mallards On A Merry-Go-Round; Racoons On A Rocket Ship; Sharks On A Helicopter;
Wolves On A Space Shuttle; Whales On A Wagon; Elephants On A Flat Bed Truck;

Zebras On A Zeppelin; Horses On A Bicycle; Chickens On A Stagecoach; Ducks On A Motorcycle; and Geese On A Skateboard.

And don't forget there already are these movies:
Cat On A Hot Tin Roof; Clams On A Half Shell; Strangers On A Train; Bird On A Wire; Three On A Match; Puppet On A Chain; Three Men On A Horse; Cuckoo On A Choo Choo; Butterfly On A Wheel, et al.

X marks the spot

News item, circa 1918 -- "The U.S. government passed the first laws concerning radio broadcasting in 1912. Within five years, more than 8,500 transmitting licenses had been issued and a chorus of radio voices was creating an 'amateur clamor' in the American heavens."

Bill Crawford, co-author of Border Radio, talks about radio history and the original band of broadcasting renegades on the Aug. 24 Cotolo Chronicles. (Pictured is Wolfman Jack, border-radio alumni, and Frank Cotolo broadcasting live in the deep South, circa 1988.)

Slaughter at the border

"The men and women who created border radio were frontiersmen of the ether, imaginative experimenters who came to la frontera seeking freedom from the restrictions of the American media establishment. By building huge transmitters and testing new and untried formats, these pioneers created a proving ground for many of the technical, legal, and programming aspects of today's broadcasting industry, and they managed to be quite entertaining as well."

On Aug. 24, Bill Crawford, half of the authorship of Border Radio, a journal of the "virgin communication wilderness," much like Internet's alternative broadcasting in the new millennium, will be our guest from border-radio territory.

"This book is a collection of just some of these tales, the chronicles of a few amazing individuals who made their way to the tall antennas rising from the rugged countryside of northern Mexico and left their mark on the mysterious, elusive, and always entertaining sliver of the American electromagnetic spectrum designated by the letter X." (Photo of XERF, highlighting the towers of 250,000 watts of power.)

Join Bill and the great ghosts of the X, including Dr. Brinkley, Wolfman Jack and the folk and country music heroes of yesteryear on Aug. 24.

Monday news bits

Thanks to our good friend Bill Bostic, we have some follow-up news on our talks about Wikipedia. Check out this guy.

Jay J. Johnson, on our Aug. 10 program, talked about a drinking-water crisis that is looming boldly in the world. Water? Check out this article, again thanks to Mr. Bostic.

How about a Cotolo Chronicles Bridge? Seriously. It is not too late for everyone to vote so the show can get a bridge named after it in Hungary. Click here to read the story and find out what to do. This is thanks to Jiggy Jaguar.

Radio Online has added our program on its website, so peruse their world on the net for the plethora of radio now available, indie and commercial, on the internet.

Our good friend Rachel Page has an updated website with much more of her artwork available. Drop by and support her wonderful efforts by clicking here.

Weekend menu

This weekend, enjoy the entertainment, peruse the programs ....

The Aug. 10 Cotolo Chronicles, part one of our Border Radio shows, rebroadcasts over the weekend and into next week (see schedule below). And check Podomatic for a stream and another RSS feed. For more details on the subject, check out Bill Crawford's book, Border Radio, (see cover on left) and watch this blog for when Bill is a guest on part two of our series.

On Aug. 12 at 2 p.m. (EST), enjoy Henry Morgan and The High Grass Boys performing in a rebroadcast of their live show. It's a presentation of Weekend SRN One.

Look around at the informative blog run by Laura Dawson, who is the guest on the Aug. 17 program. Her blog is a library of news and information that is valuable to all of the netorati. She is a true informniac and a great guest.

Also, check out Joey Mike and his Behind The Mike podcast, available at his blog. He has four shows on the shelf and could use your support. Joey is a cool guy with all the right energy for talk radio's new arena.

Trotting into the past

Aug. 5 is the day of the Hambletonian Final, a $1-million harness race that draws the attention of the world (since trotting harness racing is very popular and a lucrative business overseas).

This year, a horse named Mr Pine Chip should win the race. But let's go back to 1968 with the video below and watch a classic short film about the Hambletonian of that year. In its faded-color glory, with its cornball music soundtrack and script and featuring a great racecaller, my friend, Stanley Bergstein, study the feel and atmosphere of another era, as well as the performances by a great horse.

Seeing spots before my eyes

All right, so a lot of programs are beginning to post their ad rates. It is, then, time for our show to reveal its ad package. This is going to be short and simple.

A text link to this page is $10 a month. If you want a special newsletter sponsored by your product or service, along with a banner on the page, that's $50 a month.

On the air, live spots read by the host are $100 a month. The spots have no specific time limit and references to the product or service throughout the show are included at no extra cost. On most months, we have four programs, but on months where there are five, it is still only $100. The spot is read in "show style," meaning we present the information in a fashion that does not affect the flow of the show. Specific copy is accepted but translated appropriately.

Recorded commercial spots are not accepted. Please email cotolo@podomatic.com with specific questions or for any more information. Just remember that more people know about Yukon Jack in 2006 than did in 2005.

And now, back to our blog.
